Hubbard vs. Tour de France Winner
Well that’s an experience I won’t soon forget…
On Sunday, 13 Jan 2019, I went for a lazy spin and ended up riding the wheel of the current winner of the Tour de France. Not too shabby, eh?
I had actually slept in that morning and ended up starting my ride later than usual, but the timing worked out perfectly. I was heading north on PCH and right around Sunset, Cameron Wurf and Geraint Thomas passed me. They were cruising at an easy pace, so I caught up and said hi, introduced myself. I asked where they were headed, and when they said Topanga Canyon, I said that I was headed there as well.
Cameron and Geraint were nice enough to let me ride their wheels all the way up the climb. I was trying to act casual, but my heart rate was through the roof. I was genuinely starstruck. As we passed other riders up the climb, I tried to stay as close to their wheels as possible, lest anyone think that I wasn’t supposed to be out on a casual training ride with this duo!
At the top of the climb, we stopped and faffed about for a few minutes. Geraint has been out in Los Angeles for the past few weeks on a combination training / family holiday. We got in a bit of banter, he was nice enough to take a couple of photos with me, and I wished him good luck for the season ahead.
This was truly an incredible experience! I’m very grateful to Cameron and Geraint for taking a bit of time to make my day.
Strava or it didn’t happen.
